When I was young I thought I was going to be the next Shaun White, the famous snowboarder. I was winning skateboard contests at the age of five, was sponsored in wakeboarding by the age of nine, and made it to National’s in snowboarding at thirteen. As it turns out, that was not my destiny. At the age of ten, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. I shattered my ankle at fourteen, and received the news that I also had rheumatoid arthritis at fifteen. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by inflammation of the digestive or gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Over 700,000 people in America suffer from Crohn’s Disease and there is no cure, only treatments to manage the symptoms. There was a time when I thought my illness was going to keep me from enjoying my love of sports, but I am a fighter. So as my “extreme” sport options became unrealistic, I found a love for the game of golf. I came to Saddlebrook Preparatory School to pursue my dreams of playing collegiate golf and will graduate this Spring having accomplished that goal.
Today, I have the opportunity to share my story and hopefully inspire other young people to never feel defeated by their Crohn’s Disease. Please support me in my attempt to raise $50,000 for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation by coming out and playing golf on the course that has been my training ground, Saddlebrook’s renowned Palmer Course. Sponsor a hole, donated an auction item, or play with an academy student! There are so many opportunities to contribute to this amazing cause that can truly make a difference, as 100% of all donations will go directly to the foundation to help find a cure.
